Hyderabad: Open, overflowing drains are bringing clothes, plastic bags, cement, jute bags, medical waste, plastic bags filled with syringes, into the Kapra inlet area.
The sewage workers who pull out these things from the drains state that the huge open nala near the market area and also near the major garbage dumps are not covered, due to which big bags of garbage get carried away by rainwater.
As these are massive open nalas going across colonies, those spots where they are covered with manholes, often have large bags stuck in them, leading to leakage or even breaks in the drain.
The Kapra Circle has seen enormous development in terms of multi-storied buildings and this has led to a major strain on the infrastructure.
A senior engineer on condition of anonymity explained, “The drainage system in the area cannot carry rain water. Also many new constructions have mixed rain and drainage water into one channel. This is adding to the problem. The septic tanks are not cleaned every year in this area which has resulted in severe accumulation and blockage of drains.”
Resident associations in various colonies state that the septic tanks have been linked to the main drainage and it is not possible to clean them, as the costs are very high.
Mr. D Srinivas, a resident explained, “Since three years, GHMC has stopped cleaning septic tanks, which has further aggravated the problem in these areas.
Due to this reason, most of the sewage systems are collapsing and it is leading to this chaos. They must charge colonies and start this work all over again, so that the pressure on the drains are reduced.”
Colonies have been complaining continuously to Kapra, but hardly any action is being taken. When it rains the roads are filled with silt-- that’s the reality.
